TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The Transportation Ministry is still assessing Lion Air with regard to several delays in the airlines departures some time ago. The evaluation is ongoing, said Herry Bhakti Singayudha Gumay, the Transportation Ministrys Air Transport director general, last week.

According to Herry, no specific target of the assessment has been established, due to several aspects to be reviewed, including the crews and aircrafts readiness to service their routes. We need time. The evaluation is related to the scheduling and the timely record, not the airworthiness, he said.

Based on the evaluation, the government will assess the operational managements capacity. If the number of crews and aircrafts are not comparable to the operated routes, the ministry may ask the airline to reduce their frequency.

On June 5, a Lion Air flight was delayed up to five hours at the Sultan Syarif Kasim II Airport in Pekanbaru. Similar delays also happened on the Jakarta-Medan flight on June 6 and later, on June 10, on a Jakarta-Makassar flight.

Edward Sirait, a Lion Air spokesperson, said that the airline executives met the ministrys officials last Friday. He explained that the delay was caused by the un-adjustability of flight schedules. There was no connectivity between one module and the other, he said.

But, Edward was reluctant to specify the assessment results. Lion Air will continue to improve their flight system nonetheless, especially since Lion Air has been incurring losses due to the delays. We are still calculating our losses. We will probably have the results by next week, he said.
