Two bombs that exploded in quick succession have left at least seven people dead in the Iraqi city of Ramadi, officials say.

They said the bombings, which occurred at about 18:00 local time (15:00 GMT), left another 13 people injured.

Several of the victims of the second blast were police officers who had arrived to investigate.

Ramadi was once a stronghold for the insurgency led by al-Qaeda. Now militant attacks are intermittent.

The bombs in Ramadi came amid a flurry of violence across Iraq.

In Baghdad on Wednesday, a bomb killed a policeman at Al-Rusafa prison and a general was stabbed to death at his home, the Agence France-Presse news agency reported.

Three policemen were killed when a bomb went off near an alcohol shop in the Iraqi capital late on Tuesday, officials said.

Deadly attacks were also reported in Mosul and Kirkuk in the north, and in Hilla, south of Baghdad.

Violence in Iraq is much reduced since the worst of the violence in 2006-2007, though there is concern about continuing instability and the planned withdrawal of 46,000 US non-combat troops by the end of the year.
