TEMPO Interactive, Medan:The aftershock tremors at the North Tapanuli Regency, North Sumatra, is increasing. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) recorded hundreds of aftershocks. On Saturday, 300 aftershocks were recorded by the digital seismograph.

Rifwar Kamin, the BMKG survey team leader, said that the digital seismograph was set on June 17, or three days after the first earthquake shook the North Tapanuli Regency with a 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Rifwar explained that aftershocks with a 5.1 magnitude on the Richter scale raised concern among the residents. In one minute, two aftershocks occured. Yesterday, at 00.00 to 13.00 Western Indonesia Time, 32 aftershocks occurred.

Rifwar said that residents are still experiencing the aftershocks. Here, in Sarulla [the Pahae Jae District], is the epicenter, he said.

Meanwhile, Tumbur Hutabarat, the North Tapanuli Regency Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) director, said that the aftershocks have not caused any damage. The number of destroyed buildings is still at 846 units. Although the data records 1,941 units, the number only shows additional non-severe damage, said Tumbur.

Yesterday, at 11.15 local time, a 5.7-magnitude earthquake shook the Bengkulu Province. According to Dadang Permana, the Bengkulu BMKG head, the epicenter was situated at 3.3 Degrees South Latitude and 101.22 Degrees East Longitude, 84 kilometers to the Southeast of Muko-muko, with a depth of 26 kilometers. Residents do not need to panic because there is no potential for tsunami, said Dadang.
