SPE Petroleum to End Exploration at Madura Block

TEMPO Interactive, Bangkalan:The SPE Petroleum Ltd oil company terminated all oil and gas exploration at the Madura block in East Java. Muhammad Dimyati, the Bangkalan Mining and Energy Boards Energy and Electricity Sector chief, said that the drilling was halted because there was no oil and gas in that block as expected.

All activities had been terminated for some long time, since the end of 2010, said Dimyati yesterday. Earlier two wells were explored: the Dolang-Dolang I well at Genting Village in Konang District and Madederop I well, Banyuning Dejeh Village, Geger District, in Bangkalan Regency.

According to Dimyati, the termination did not mean that the company was leaving Madura because SPE Petroleum still owned the management rights over a number of oil and gas production areas in Bangkalan Regency.

SPEs activities are currently limited to seismic evaluation in order to search for oil and gas sources in several districts. The exploration stage has not been carried out because the company fears more failure and loss. The seismic data received from previous company was inaccurate, and, therefore, SPE is conducting seismic a thorough re-evaluation, he said.

Despite the potential loss of revenues, according to Dimyati, Bangkalan will not be harmed by the failure of finding oil in the region. Conversely, SPE is the party which incurred losses because they have spent money without discovering any natural oil and gas. We have not lost money because SPE paid us taxes, he added.

Meanwhile, Akhmat Sabidi, the PT SPE Petroleum operations manager, has yet to give any statements on the failed oil exploration in Bangkalan. Earlier, oil and gas drilling at Madura block triggered protests from residents. Unruly action against SPE Petroleum occurred in Pamekasan, Sampang, and Sumenep.
