TEMPO Interactive, Jakarta:The ombudsman said the Foreign Affairs Ministry was negligent and indirectly caused the death of 17-year-old Ernawati, a Kudus resident who worked in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.
The ombudsman will immediately summon the ministry, said Kartini, an ombudsman, at her office yesterday. The remark was made after receiving complaints from the family of Erna (deceased), represented by the sister Yenny Larasati. Larasati was accompanied by a Migrant Care member, Eli Anita.
Larasati and Anita filed a complaint on the Foreign Affairs Ministry, the National Agency for Migrant Worker Placement and Protection (BNP2TKI), and the Bughsan Labrindo Migrant Worker Placement Agency (PJTKI) which sent Erna to Riyadh one and a half years ago. All three institutions are allegedly responsible for Ernas death.
Kartini said all parties which had been charged with negligence will be summoned for questioning. The ministry will be questioned on the alleged negligence which caused Ernas death, the BNP2TKI on her protection, while the PJTKI on faking Ernas age, which then allowed her to leave for Saudi Arabia.
Larasati said that the ministry was slow to act. Her sister was pronounced dead by the Indonesian Embassy in Saudi Arabia on February 10, allegedly because of drinking rat poison. Ernawati had been working in Riyadh since January 31. Kartini agrees with Larasati that the ministry was negligent.
