LOS ANGELES (TheWrap) – “Captain America: The First Avenger” racked up a solid $4 million in midnight screenings on Thursday night, according to studio estimates.
The star-spangled superhero beat out the rest of this summer’s comic book brethren in its late night screenings. Of the competition, Fox’s “X-Men: First Class” racked up $3.38 million, “Thor” banked “$3.25 million, and “Green Lantern” grossed $3.35 million.
“Captain America” debuted in 2,000 theaters last night and will now roll out to 3,715 locations over the weekend. Paramount, which is distributing the film for Marvel, is projecting a debut in the $60 million range.
The Joe Johnston directed comic book adaptation, which cost $140 million to produce. It stars Chris Evans as the shield wearing protagonist and Hugo Weaving as the villain Red Skull.
It goes head-to-head with Sony’s romantic comedy “Friends with Benefits” and the second weekend of a small arthouse film called “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.”
