LOS ANGELES – Harry Potter had an even bigger weekend than his Hollywood headmasters first projected.
Sunday revenues for “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ came in higher than anticipated, giving the film a $169.2 million opening weekend domestically. That’s $600,000 more than distributor Warner Bros. estimated over the weekend.
It was a record-breaker for the “Harry Potter” finale, topping the previous best domestic debut of $158.4 million for “The Dark Knight.” Factoring in today’s higher admission prices, “The Dark Knight” sold more tickets, though.
“Deathly Hallows: Part 2″ also had a record overseas opening with $307 million in 59 countries. The film is approaching half a billion dollars at the worldwide box office after just days in release.
